Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi and his Palestinian counterpart Mahmoud Abbas on Sunday discussed the military escalation between the Palestinians and the Israelis in the Gaza Strip.
During a phone conversation, the two presidents highlighted the danger of the absence of a political prospect and the exacerbation of the current conditions, which threaten civilians’ lives as well as the region’s security and stability, the Egyptian Presidency said in a statement.
They also expressed deep concern over the continuation of the current escalation and the ensuing severe deterioration of the security and humanitarian conditions.
Sisi and Abbas agreed that achieving sustainable stability in the region requires reaching a just and comprehensive solution to the Palestinian issue based on the two-state solution.
The Palestinian Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) on Saturday launched a surprise attack on Israeli towns adjacent to the Gaza Strip, prompting Israel to launch retaliatory strikes on Gaza. Egypt has been working to stop the military conflict between Hamas and Israel.
The Gaza-based Health Ministry’s latest update on Sunday said the death toll from Israeli airstrikes in Gaza has risen to 413, with more than 2,300 others injured, while Israel’s state-owned Kan TV news reported the death toll in Israel has reached 700.
